Our Inaugural Biennial
Background
From August 7-13, 2006, ZER01 and its partners – CADRE Institute for New Media at San Jose State University, City of San Jose, Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley, Montalvo Arts Center, San Jose Convention & Visitors Bureau, San Jose Museum of Art, and the Tech Museum of Innovation – produced both the inaugural ZeroOne (now 01SJ): A Global Festival of Art on the Edge and the 13th International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA).
Highlights:
- More than 20,000 individuals made 80,000+ visits to 250 art installations and 25+ performances and public talks
- Nearly 500 artists from 40+ countries were showcased throughout San Jose
- Students from five continents participated as part of a significant educational outreach program
- Over a dozen new works, five of which were long-term residencies in collaboration with Montalvo Arts and San Jose State University, were commissioned and an additional 29 projects were supported at levels ranging from $1,500 to $75,000
- Worldwide media coverage from the New York Times to Asahi Shimbun from the Mercury News to Wired as well as broadcast and online forums carried news of the Biennial
- The proceedings ofthe Pacific Rim New Media Summit and the ISEA Symposium were published in specialissues of Leonardo and Intelligent Agent
- According to a City of San Jose-sponsored economic impactstudy, ZeroOne generated more than $9 million in new economic activity
- More than 75 corporations and foundations and over100 individuals sponsored the Biennial, which had a total budget of $2.1 million.
