South Hall in San Jose, CA

San Jose South Hall where Out of the Garage, Into the World will take place
For the two weeks prior to the 2010 01SJ Biennial, ZER01 is inviting independent artists, designers, architects, engineers, programmers, and corporate and academic research programs to publicly work in San Jose’s 80,000 square foot “South Hall” to create projects for exhibition, performance, provocation, and interaction. This innovative platform will build on the dynamic histories of garage hacking and citizen science to imagine not just what’s next but to ensure that what’s next matters.
Out of the Garage, Into the World uses Build Your Own World as its overarching theme, and its methodology is rooted in the ethos of creating and inventing for the common good. Out of the Garage, Into the World acknowledges the blurred boundaries between garage hacking and citizen science and invites a range of such DIY laboratories and re-purposed spaces to perform in the public sphere, where the general public can observe and even participate in the process. The intent of Out of the Garage, Into the World is for artists to create projects that have a positive impact on their neighborhoods and communities, however they define them.
There are three ways for artists to participate in Out of the Garage, Into the World:
- through the open call for projects amd an artist-led public workshop
- through invitation by ZER01, as an independent artist or artist group, an academic research center, or corporate R+D unit
- through workshops sourced from open calls (stay tuned for more details!)
There are three primary ways for the general public to participate in Out of the Garage, Into the World:
- visit South Hall in early to mid September while the projects are in process to engage directly with the artists and researchers
- sign up for and participate in a public workshop (stay tuned for more details)
- view, explore, and interact with the results of the projects and workshops during the 01SJ Biennial from September 16-19
Examples of programming include artists Todd Chandler and Jeff Stark, who have been invited to construct a screening environment for the 01SJ Biennial Future Films series from recycled materials, such as salvaged automobiles. And the Eyebeam Roadshow, a touring event organized by the fellows and resident artists at the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center, who will organize a series of talks, workshops, and hands-on activities inside of South Hall designed to blow minds and promote open source art and technology. Check back soon for additional project and workshop information.
ZER01 is currently soliciting proposals from California-based artists and artist teams to lead a hands-on public workshop to take place within Out of the Garage, Into the World during the 2010 01SJ Biennial.
