C'mon Give a Sh_t! - Lava Mae brings toilets to the streets.

How attached are you to your toilet? San Francisco-based Lava Mae, a mobile shower and toilet service for the homeless is definitely attached to theirs and making good use out of it. Lava Mae, the brainchild of Doniece Sandoval, one of ZERO1’s Board Trustees, recently found out about ‘World Toilet Day’ and decided to mount a public art installation entitled C’mon Give a Sh_t!. The installation, is comprised of six “decorated” toilets, that will grace Market Street tomorrow near 10th from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Passersby are invited to take their picture with the toilets and upload them to Lava Mae’s Pinterest page.

Participating artists include Ana Fernandez, Sarah Ratchye, and Travis Somerville; and designers Maloos Anvarian, Jeff Shipley, and Monica Viarengo. You can make these works of art part of your private collection through an online auction that is already open. The toilets will raise funds for six of Lava Mae’s key partners: Asian Pacific Island Wellness Center, Mission Neighborhood Resource Center, Project Homeless Connect, Hospitality House, San Francisco Mayor’s Office of HOPE’s Homeless Fund, and At the Crossroads.

Lava Mae’s efforts not only bring to light the struggles for the population who make the streets of San Francisco their home. On a global scale, the benefits of proper sanitation, good hygiene, and clean drinking water on health and wellbeing, educational attainment, and economic growth are increasingly gaining recognition as well by the international development community.
