Calling innovative new media and digital artists who have a love of travel and passion for community-driven art to apply to participate in the American Arts Incubator.

American Arts Incubator artist Kendal Henry in Papua New Guinea

From March 7th to April 1st, 2015 Kendal Henry is on-the-ground in Papua New Guinea working with the local community to oversee a series of public art projects that focus on the topic of women's empowerment. His activities include attending the Women's Forum that is being sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Port Moresby, leading a training workshop that will result in a number of small grant awards to local artists, and creating his own public art project. Both the University of PNG and the YWCA are partnering with the American Arts Incubator to explore ideas on how art can be used as a tool for social change in Papua New Guinea.

Here at ZERO1 we are kicking off the New Year with a brand new website for the American Arts Incubator, our international artist exchange program planned in partnership with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Take a peek at americanartsincubator.org and learn more about the hybrid training lab and public art production workshop that addresses community issues through cross cultural art collaborations. You'll be able to follow Kendal Henry as he works with communities in Papua New Guinea to explore how art can be a tool to empower women, or see how Xiaowei Wang addresses economic empowerment in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia via digital mapping. Is meditation performative when a simple technical system is constructed to make visible the performer's state of mind? This is the question that artist John Slepian asks as he experiments with a new kind of embodiment in the digital world. In Transcendence, the artist is literally levitated through the power of his mind. Using a hacked toy brainwave sensor, electronics, and powerful actuators, the artist lifts himself by achieving a meditative state. Transcendence humorously and ironically explores the relationship of technology and spirit, and the nature of performance art itself.
