From the great renaissance masters to contemporary art superstars, technology has always played a part in creating ambitious works of art.

BRING IT! Performance Art Series with John Slepian

Is meditation performative when a simple technical system is constructed to make visible the performer's state of mind? This is the question that artist John Slepian asks as he experiments with a new kind of embodiment in the digital world. In Transcendence, the artist is literally levitated through the power of his mind. Using a hacked toy brainwave sensor, electronics, and powerful actuators, the artist lifts himself by achieving a meditative state. Transcendence humorously and ironically explores the relationship of technology and spirit, and the nature of performance art itself.

BRING IT! Performance Art Series with Miwa Matreyek

Internationally recognized animator, designer, and multimedia artist, Miwa Matreyek, opened the BRING IT! Performance Art Series with her live performance on June 25th.

Based in Los Angeles, Matreyek creates animated short films that integrate animation, performance, and video installation. Arriving to animation from a background in collage, her work explores how animation transforms when it is combined with body, both physically in her performance pieces, as well as a composited video element in her short films. She is interested in the slippery meeting point of cinema and theater/ performance, the moments of convergence where fantastical illusions are created, and the moments of divergence where the two struggle against each other.

ZERO1 holds space in China at thingworld: International Triennial of New Media Art

It has been exciting to participate in thingworld: International Triennial of New Media Art 2014, at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.  As the third edition, “thingworld: International Triennial of New Media Art 2014” follows the internationally acclaimed Olympic Cultural Project “Synthetic Times: Media Art China 2008” and “transLife: International Triennial of New Media Art”, which was officially instituted as a triennial of new media art at the National Art Museum of China in 2011. It has been an honor for ZERO1 to participate not only in bringing amazing art to the Triennial through artists Karolina Sobecka and Chris Baker, but also help shape and define the formation of the Triennial as our ED was on the advisory committee.
